Exercise After Tummy Tuck: How to Make Your Results Last
As a plastic surgeon in Raleigh, NC, one of the most common questions I get from patients considering abdominoplasty is: “Can I exercise after tummy tuck surgery and which workouts will make my results last?” It is a great question, and the answer has two parts. There is what you should do before your surgery to prepare your body, and there is what you should focus on after you heal to protect and maintain your results. Whether you are a self-described gym girlie or excited to get started fitness, this guide is for you.
Pre-Surgical Exercises for Tummy Tuck: Prehabilitation Matters
One of the best things you can do to prepare for tummy tuck surgery is to strengthen your body before surgery. This concept is called prehabilitation, and it makes a real difference in how smoothly your recovery goes.
Here is something patients often do not think about: in the first few days after your tummy tuck, you will not be able to stand up completely straight. You will be slightly flexed at the hips, bent forward at roughly a 30 to 40 degree angle. That position puts a lot of demand on your legs and lower body. If those muscles are already strong going into surgery, your recovery will be far more comfortable and stable.
My Top Pre-Surgical Exercise Recommendation: Squats
I know that might seem like an unexpected suggestion, but it makes complete sense when you understand what your body will need post-op. Squats strengthen exactly the muscles you will rely on most during recovery:
- Quadriceps
- Hamstrings
- Glutes
You do not need a gym membership to do this. Body weight squats work just fine. If you want to add resistance, simply hold weights in your hands. The goal is to go into your abdominoplasty with strong, primed muscles rather than weak, unstable ones.
A word of caution: If you have diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles), core-heavy exercises can sometimes cause lower back pain or injury before surgery. So, while other strength training is certainly beneficial, squats are the safest and most impactful exercise you can do to prepare for tummy tuck. Stick with those as your priority and you will be in great shape heading into the operating room.
Exercise After Tummy Tuck: Post-Surgical Guidelines and Exercise Restrictions
First things first: after your abdominoplasty, you will go through a standard post-op recovery period. During that time, strenuous activity is off the table. Once your body has healed and your plastic surgeon clears you for exercise, then we can talk about getting back to it in a strategic way that makes your tummy tuck results last.
My biggest recommendation after you are cleared? Strengthen your core. A tummy tuck repairs and tightens your abdominal muscles. Maintaining those results long-term requires active effort on your part. Here are some exercises I love for tummy tuck recovery and beyond:
- Squats (again!): Yes, squats make the list post-surgery too. Body weight squats, jump squats, or toe-raise squats are all great options. What surprises many of my patients is that squats actually engage your core in addition to your legs. It is a two-for-one that I strongly recommend keeping in your regular rotation.
- Toe Touches with Weight: Hold a weight in your hands to engage your upper core, then slowly do toe touches while gradually extending your legs farther out. As your legs flatten out and extend, you are working both your upper and lower core. This is one of my favorites for targeting the full abdominal region.
- Crunches with Added Resistance: Classic crunches are a solid choice, but you can level them up by holding a weight above your head while you crunch. This engages both the upper and lower core rather than just going through the motion. Sit-ups are great too, but they alone are not the whole story when it comes to building a strong core after abdominoplasty.
The goal of your post-surgical fitness routine is to protect your tummy tuck results by building real strength around the work we did in the operating room. When you strengthen your core after abdominoplasty, you are investing in long-term results.
